Title: | Cultural Appropriation |
Description: | This sculpture shares my experience with cultural appropriation, specifically dia de los muertos. The sugar skull is probably the most recognized icon when it comes to dia de los muertos. Many businesses and other companies don’t realize the cultural importance and value it has to some people and they use the holiday for profit. The sugar skull seems to be losing meaning and it's more of an aesthetic and fun decoration than a meaningful item. My project shows a skull that is breaking and has dollar signs and hearts on it to symbolize the tradition being lost and how it is being used for likes and money. |
