Title: F-Twenty-One
Description: Handbuilt Terra-Cotta, Terra Sigillata, Underglaze, Glaze - While the F-21 fighter jet is an interesting parallel that could add meaning to this piece, the primary meaning of F-21 lies elsewhere. F-21 is an abbreviation of the original name of the piece, a 21-word alliterative poem all consisting of words beginning with 'F'. The poem goes as follows: Fervent fascination for frightening frustration / Fighting futile fights, famished for fruition / Fearing fatal failure forever foreboding / Forthcoming feelings forbidden from forming.     This "Fervent fascination" refers to a close inspection of the Nietzschean lion, the second stage of metamorphosis Frederick Nietzsche describes in Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Laced with further poetry describing various "frustrations" regarding various impositions on individuals by society, touching on the topics of model minorities, competition, sexuality, alcohol, social media, consumerism, and popular culture in general, this bust serves as an overexaggerated depiction of the lion, a looking glass more akin to a funhouse mirror than anything that allows one to truly "see" themselves in an abstract sense. The inverse of any given set of rules is simply another set of rules, and breaking every rule is synonymous to following more rules—spontaneous, uncontrollable rebellion is not independence. This piece explores what it means to follow for the sake of following, and at least equally importantly, what it means to rebel for the sake of rebellion.
