Title: Coiled
Description: For this piece, I wanted to capture a kind of unseen beauty where the viewer can experience a chaotic moment in time. In reality, if a person were that close to a snake, they would be running away, so for this piece, I wanted to capture details that are typically missed in the chaos. To get the base form of the snake, I rolled slabs of clay and formed them around logs of crumpled paper that were later removed. In order to keep the balance of the sculpture, I slowly built the form up by scoring the formed slabs together. Finally, for the detailing, I made each scale one-by-one, and then used a cold finish using acrylic paints for the entirety of the form. My sculpture pauses an intense moment in time, allowing the viewer to stop and observe the details of the snake and its entirety. I chose this specific positioning for the creature because it allows for creative interpretation as to what the animal is seeing that we as viewers can’t. I wanted the creature to appear as if it were reacting to something that the viewer can’t see, like some kind of invisible threat. I thought that it would be interesting to capture the animalistic instincts of a snake and how we see them as dangerous and terrifying, but also recognizing how they also see us as dangerous as well. To me, it captures how the fear goes both ways.
